OceanViewer

Region: Atlantic Canada
Activity type: Computer based
How you help: By using oceanographic models to learn about the ocean
Resources required: Internet connection

Oceanographers use computer models to study currents, tides and waves in the ocean. These models contain lots of complicated physics and mathematics to explain how the ocean functions. But luckily for you, all the hard work has been done and now you can see the results!

OceanViewer is a website with up-to-date predictions of water properties and currents along the east coast of Canada. OceanViewer was created to give citizens, ship operators, surfers, fishermen, and anyone else interested in the ocean access to oceanographic data. You can check out water temperature, salinity, wave heights, even the location of ships and animals! There are also live feeds from webcams on the land, so you can get an instant view of the ocean.
