Our Radioactive Ocean
Region: Pacific Canada
Activity type: Outdoor
How you help: By collecting water samples
Resources required: Access to beach, internet connection
Many people living on the Pacific Ocean are concerned about the release of radioactive contaminants following the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution want to study the spread and impact of radiation throughout the Pacific Ocean and they need your help.
Their website will guide you through the process of proposing your local beach as a sampling site. You will be shown how to raise money, request a sampling kit, collect water samples and send your samples to the lab for testing. Your water sample will provide an important piece in the puzzle of understanding how radiation is spreading throughout the ocean.
