Science and the Sea. Bamfield, BC – Apply by May 1 for July 27-Sept. 4

• The unique marine and terrestrial environments of the Pacific Northwest will set the context for this non-majors science course at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC). The coastal ecosystem will provide opportunities for making observations, developing and testing scientific hypotheses and placing scientific findings in a social context. Course themes will include coastal biodiversity, ecology, and environmental science. The class will participate in: field trips by boat and on foot to sample intertidal, freshwater, and forest habitats; case studies and discussions; labs and written assignments. http://www.bamfieldmsc.com/university/apply.html

Ocean Sampling Day and Transatlantic Ocean Science and Ocean Literacy Workshop. Everywhere and Online – May 4-22 and June 17-26

• During the period around June 21 2015 scientists and citizen scientists around the world will sample the ocean using a variety of methods. Join the online workshop to learn more about the Ocean Sampling Day project, and learn how to participate in the Citizen Science project, MyOSD. Meet the scientists involved in the project, and learn about the importance of microbial biodiversity. Join conversations with colleagues from around the world. The OSD 2014 involved more than 600 people from all continents and 20% of them were citizen scientists!  Phase 2 of this online workshop (June17-26) will extend the conversation to document the actions of citizen scientists participating in MyOSD and to continue to develop the network. Adopt-a-Fish. West Vancouver, BC – May 9

• Pick up your Salmon Release Certificate at West Vancouver Memorial Library and then head to Memorial Park to release a baby Coho Salmon (called a smolt) into the wild! Once released, the smolt will swim to Burrard Inlet and spend the next two years at sea before returning to McDonald Creek to start the next generation of salmon. What a journey! Schools on Board – Arctic Ship Based Field Program. Canadian Arctic – Apply by May 25

• This fall Schools on Board will take high school students and teachers the furthest north in its history!  A truly unique learning adventure in Canada’s spectacular north, on board the Canadian Coast Guard Ship (CCGS) Amundsen. While experiencing spectacular views of scenic fjords, ice islands and icebergs, participants will be exposed to the on board science program through lectures and workshops presented by ArcticNet scientists, as well as participate in laboratory experiments and on-deck sampling operations including the deployment of plankton nets, oceanographic moorings and seafloor and water-sampling equipment. In addition to the science, participants explore the environmental and social issues related to climate change in Canada’s Arctic and the role of science and Inuit traditional knowledge in addressing these issues. Call for Papers: Ocean Mapping. June 1

• The Journal of Ocean Technology (JOT) invites the submission of technical papers that describe cutting edge research related to ocean mapping for its fall 2015 issue. Papers should present the results of new (i.e., not previously published) research in ocean technology, science or engineering, and be no more than 7,500 words in length. All papers are subject to a rigorous peer-review process and must be submitted no later than June 1, 2015.
